Fleet Captain’s Log – August 2, 2014 (Day 2)

August 3, 2014

Today was a very rough day from Black Rock to Branford. We had 3-5 foot swells, white caps, heavy rain, and strong winds on our nose. Needless to say it was not pleasant and certainly not for the faint at heart.

Northstar had a rough ride as they took on water going through the swells. Their furniture got wet from the spray. The good news is that they made it to Branford in good time, safe and sound albeit a bit drenched.

Tively II had to turn back as the crew became ill. They spent a second night at Black Rock (see Captain Dan’s email below).

Leeds the Way made it but it was challenging as we slammed through the swells for many hours. The trip took twice as long as it should have.

Northstar and Leeds the Way were happy to be on solid ground and went to dinner at Dockside on premises to celebrate a safe but fierce journey!

Hi, well, here we are back home. We started out late, close to noon, and were making about 2 1/2 knots in heavy swells. What started as 3 excited, energetic boys soon became 3 very quiet, pale log-like kids. A bit before noon I decided we were not going to make it before 6 or 7 so decided to go back to Black Rock. Surprisingly, as we headed back, the kids recovered, so we had one of the nicest sails of the summer, heading across the sound. Still lots of swells but very nice sailing. Of course, the sea sick bug hit again, but got worse and hit two other people. We have some more cleaning to do (ugh) but we limped in to Black Rock, left the boat, and drove home with our daughter, her husband and 3 kids. I,m not sure that the kids will sail again, but it sure made memories.
MJ and I are heading up to Black Rock early Monday am and will return to HYC, hopefully by tomorrow night. We wanted to get to Cedar Island, but we are passing for this trip. Fairweather Dan

Best Regards,
